MTA Fare Calculator: NYC Subway & Bus Costs
Work out what the NYC subway and buses cost you per week and per month with OMNY: the fare for each ride, when the weekly fare cap makes the rest free, reduced and Fair Fares prices, and AirTrain JFK.
AirTrain rides don't count toward the $35 subway cap; they have their own $43.50 30-day cap
- At 14 rides a week you reach the $35.00 cap, so every ride after that within the same 7 days is free.
- That saves $7.00 a week compared with paying for every ride.
- Tap with the same card, phone, or watch every time: each one counts rides separately.
| Payment Method | Weekly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
OMNY Rolling Cap | $35.00 | $151.66 |
| Individual Pay-Per-Ride | $42.00 | $181.99 |
There is no pass to buy: tap the same card, phone, or watch, and once you have paid $35.00 in any 7 consecutive days, more subway and local bus rides in that window are free.

How the OMNY Weekly Fare Cap Works
The cap replaces weekly passes; it resets on a rolling 7-day window
Tap with the same card, phone, or watch and you never pay more than $35.00 in any 7 consecutive days for subway and local bus rides. At $3.00 a ride, the cap is reached on ride 12; every ride after that within the same 7 days is free. Each card and each device counts separately, even if they are linked.
- 6 rides a week: $18.00, under the cap.
- A weekday commuter, 10 rides: $30.00 a week, about $129.99 a month.
- 14 rides a week: capped at $35.00, saving $7.00.
MetroCard, OMNY Cards, and Visitor Tips
What replaced MetroCard and how to ride on a short trip
MetroCard is ending
MetroCards stopped being sold or refilled on January 1, 2026. You can use up an old card before it expires or move its value to an OMNY Card at a Customer Service Center. MetroCards and cash (now taken only on buses) will stop being accepted on the same day, on a date the MTA will announce. You can still load cash to an OMNY Card at subway vending machines and retail locations.
Visiting New York
Tap your own contactless card or phone; there is no ticket to buy, and the weekly cap still applies. From JFK, the AirTrain plus one subway ride is $11.75. Traveling with others? Groups of up to 5 tapping the same card within five minutes pay $4.50 for each extra AirTrain rider. For door-to-door, compare the NYC taxi fare and JFK flat rate calculator.
